What is E-mobility?

E-mobility is driving a more sustainable future. It provides efficient transportation using clean electricity and it’s one of the fastest growing industries.

Let’s get started.

What does E-mobility mean?

Electric mobility, or e-mobility, refers to all transportation powered by electricity. This includes electric vehicles and e-mobility companies that build infrastructure.

It’s the key to a low-carbon mobility industry. This is because e-mobility reduces fossil fuel usage and lowers emissions, helping avoid climate change.

Today, transport produces 25% of the EU’s emissions, making e-mobility crucial to protect our planet.

What is an E-mobility vehicle?

An e-mobility vehicle uses electric propulsion instead of a combustion engine. Using an electric motor reduces its CO2 emissions.

E-mobility covers far more than just cars. It includes the entire mobility sector, from buses, lorries and trains to e-bikes, electric motorbikes and scooters. Any form of transport can become more sustainable, helping transition our economies toward renewable energy sources.

With maritime shipping accounting for 3% of global emissions, even electric-powered boating is quickly becoming a feasible solution.

Right now, there have never been more opportunities to invest in e-mobility solutions, helping boost adoption worldwide.

How do E-mobility vehicles work?

There are several types of electric mobility vehicles.

  • Battery electric vehicles, or BEVs, produce zero exhaust emissions and offer the greatest reduction in fossil fuel usage.
  • Hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) combine an electric motor with a combustion engine. The battery can be charged via the engine and using regenerative braking.
  • Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) are hybrid but can be plugged in and re-charged like a BEV.
  • Range-extended, or REEVs, are electric but contain a small engine that acts as a generator. This extends the battery life considerably, helping drivers during long journeys.

Hybrid vehicles can help lower emissions in an adaptable way. For example, in cases where a person or business is located in rural areas with less access to public charging. For the same reason, hybrid technology is also the first step toward electric-powered maritime, providing reliable energy on long trips without stops.

With so many choices, there’s an option for everyone. This has resulted in a significant uptick in sales.

In fact, Europe is seeing continued growth in electric car registration, with a 20% increase from 2022 to 2023 (IEA Global EV Outlook 2024).

What is EV mobility infrastructure?

E-mobility infrastructure includes charging systems and networks built to support a growing user base.

Every electric vehicle needs access to power to keep moving. This is true at home and when travelling.

Unfortunately, a lack of charging stations can make longer journeys impossible and some regions can be disconnected from e-mobility solutions entirely.

The good news?

It’s now easier than ever to install charging stations at key locations. For example, residential housing, work premises, shopping centres, cinemas and sporting venues. Increasing the availability of charging stations will motivate more electric drivers.

Availability means longer trips and greater intercity travel. With the right infrastructure in place, electro-mobility will become accessible to everyone.

Charging is now faster and uses smarter management tools. These tools can track important data automatically, such as energy use and cost. This allows companies to manage multiple vehicles and stations easily.

Examples of EV mobility companies

There are many e-mobility companies and services working across the industry. It’s an efficient network and each business plays an important role in facilitating accessibility.

The most well-known companies are automotive manufacturers. Tesla is famous for producing all-electric cars, but recognised brands – including Nissan, General Motors and BMW – are increasingly selling EVs too. Volvo has even developed electric buses for public transport in cities.

However, every electric vehicle requires additional services to become more accessible.

For instance, some e-mobility services aim to assist consumers, such as app service providers helping people easily locate charge points. Examples include Octopus Electroverse and Bonnet, both of which are phone applications designed to help EV drivers easily access energy.

Lime and Uber are two major examples of companies providing pedestrians with e-mobility solutions in cities. With rentable e-bikes and e-scooters available, the services include an application built for users to both find and rent their nearest mode of transport.

At AMP IT, we build effective charging infrastructure – our service makes installation and management easy for consumers and businesses. We achieve this by adapting to the requirements of each customer, installing infrastructure at private residences and commercial buildings.

What are the key benefits of E-mobility?

EV mobility has many benefits that are both personal to the consumer and positive for society at large. It protects the planet with cleaner air and provides greater freedom to people around the world – this is essential if we want to decarbonise the mobility industry.

  • EV mobility solutions are clean

Electric cars produce less greenhouse gas, helping offset climate change. We can expect the life-cycle emissions of an electric vehicle to reduce every year by 73%.

  • An E-mobility world is healthier

Cleaner air creates a healthier environment. Around the world, 99% of people experience air quality that falls below WHO air quality guidelines, making e-mobility vital.

  • Electric Vehicle Mobility solutions reduce noise

The European Environment Agency found that 95 million people are exposed to harmful road traffic noise. Electric vehicles use quieter motors that reduce noise pollution and improve well-being.

  • You can save with Electric Mobility

E-mobility vehicles are cheaper to run. The Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit found that drivers could save as much as 800 CHF a year using electric mobility cars.

  • Clean energy needs E-mobility

Solar and Wind capacity is set to double from its 2022 levels by 2028. Already equipped with state-of-the-art electric motors, e-mobility can run entirely on clean energy.

What is the future of E-mobility?

The e-mobility sector has momentum.

Strong investment means we can expect electric vehicle manufacturing – including cars, trucks, and buses – to grow. It’s a vital component of Net Zero in 2050.

To build larger EVs, such as maritime vessels, more powerful and long-lasting batteries are needed. Norway has already successfully deployed an electric-powered fleet of ferries for shorter transportation. With further advances in technology, long-distance transport will become possible, helping shipping to become more sustainable.

In Europe, 42% of registered buses in 2023 were electric – even London, one of the world’s busiest cities, has deployed 1397 electric buses. Along with greater access to trains and electric taxis, this will help clean up the air pollution in cities, providing quick transport to pedestrians without the use of a personal car.

Smarter and more robust infrastructure, with greater public access to charging points, will pave the way for a seamless experience for people. With current developments, more towns, cities and regions will be linked entirely by e-mobility transport and services.

It’s a future that’s already in motion.
